Bill Underwood, a Canadian Forces NCO

kjkircher@hotmail.com

Could you shed any light on the experience any ranger battalion had with Bill Underwood, a Canadian Forces NCO who taught his very special form of Martial Arts to Canadian and British Commandos and (I think) US Army Rangers.

Also, any background on Camp Butler. I understand some of Underwood's training was performed at Camp Butler.

My sincere thanks for any info or contact.

Regards,

KJ Kircher

1 Leach, George

helmartsc@hotmail.com

Looking for information about a very good close friend of our family whose name is George Leach. He was originally from West Virginia. We have not heard from him since about 1970.

He was a proud member of the Darby's Rangers during WWII. He was wounded by shrapnel that took out most of his stomach. He was awarded some medals we're told.

Any information is appreciated.

5 "Tex" Rush www.steve@susanblanchard.com

My Grandfather was Winfred ‘Tex’ Rush, 5th Ranger Bn, originally from Booker, TX. I will get more of his records info from my mother soon. He unfortunately passed away in 1995. He never really liked to talk about the war. But I do have fond memories of his ‘war box’, a little wooden box with postcards from Paris, pictures of pretty Paris girls and his buddies, uniform patches, his 3 cluster Purple Heart, and other keepsakes. About once a year I would pester him to show me it and share stories. I do know he was shot 3 times within 2 months, and I believe it was in France. I am also pretty sure he was not on the D-Day invasion. When we had his service, a gentleman from the Army showed up with a flag (which I have) and (I think) he came with a copy of his service file, I had never seen it before and that is where I found when and where he was shot, etc.

Thank you all for your duty and sacrifices.....Steve Hein

1/D Virgil H. Wood rtracy8@mac.com
My mother's 1st Cousin was Virgil H. Wood who was in Company D, 1st Ranger Battalion in World War II. He was captured at Cisterna, Italy on Jan 30, 1944 and was a POW until the end of the war. Unfortunately, after his release, he was killed in a plane crash on May 18, 1945 and is buried at the Ardennes American Cemetery in Belgium. I have personally visited his grave when I was in Europe and also noticed that the site www.RangerFamily.org has his grave photo. I am doing research on the genealogy of my family and there really aren't any members left to know much about Virgil. My mother (who is deceased) had told me that the only thing she knew about his death was that he was killed in a plane crash. I never heard from anyone that he was a POW. Also, that he was a Ranger. That was about it, unfortunately. In doing my own research, I have read the books "Rangers in World War II" by Robert W. Black and most recently "Onward We Charge" by H. Paul Jeffers. Of course after doing my research, I now know the extent of the combat and battle experience as well of some of the limited POW details Virgil was a participant in. I have to say that I was very excited, impressed and proud to have had a relative who served in such a honorable and distinguished outfit with all of the history, etc.

My question anyone who might be able to help me is: How can I find more about Virgil; i.e. his service, the details of his plane crash, any potential living members he might have served with, etc. I did try to look at the military records, but it is my understanding that many were destroyed in a fire in the 1970's. Any help you may provide or any suggestions, contacts or referrals you might share with me would be appreciated.

Thank you for your help.

Hervey Mongeon

almongeon@cox.net

I am the oldest son of Ranger Hervey Mongeon, SSgt,  F Co./5th Rangers. My dad enlisted in 1940 from Fall River, MA, and transferred to the Rangers at Camp Forest, TN, in 1943, as one of the original members.  He fought through the war in Co. F, as near as I have been able to ascertain.  I would greatly appreciate any information anyone may have regarding his service.  He passed away in Dallas, TX, in 1984, without sharing much of his experiences unfortunately.  All I know of his service is what I have been able to find since his passing.

As a matter of interest to anyone seeking in depth information, I have reviewed the morning reports from the 5th which are on file in the National Archives in Silver Spring, MD.  They are interesting to read but, frankly, contain little information that is not available elsewhere.

John Charboneau

My name is Shawn G. Fuess. I recently lost my Grandfather, John Charboneau. He was  a member of Darby's Rangers. I believe he was part of the 1st Ranger btn. He never talked about his military service except for minor details. I know he was trained in Scotland, he was in N. Africa, Sicily and Anzio. Later he became part of the 1st Special Forces Service (I believe with the Canadians) I would like to find out more about his service, ie his rank, his company, where he was and what he was involved in. I would also be interested in knowing if there were any members out there who may have known him. Is any of this possible?

Thank you very much,

Grandson

Leo D Yates

If anyone reading this remembers my uncle Leo D Yates, apparently with HQ company, 2nd Ranger Infantry Battalion, I would certainly appreciate hearing from them. His name is listed in "Rangers in World War II, by Robert W. Black, page 372.  According to my records his specialty was as a light machine gunner # 604. He would have been around 25 on the date of the Normandy invasion at Pointe De Hoc.

Anthony J. Damico

I'm trying to put together a timeline of my father's service with the Rangers. He joined the Rangers on January 29,1943 as one of the first group of 100 replacements from the states. I think that this group was known for some time as Company "G". I see by the Ranger Roster link on this website that he was in the 1st Battalion/Company B, and 3rd Battalion/Company E. However, He came home after the Cisterna battle as a member of the 4th Battalion. I'm trying to piece together when he was transferred form one Battalion to the other, and which Battalion he actually spent the most time with so I can determine which operations he might have been involved in. He passed away in 1973, and was very proud to be a Ranger.

Lee J. Taylor

All family records were destroyed by a fire years ago but we do have a picture of Lee in uniform. His shoulder patch is of the 69th Infantry where he did basic training. There is a newspaper obituary from July 1949 when Lee's body was returned home.  It states that he joined the Army May 14, 1943, was a 2nd Ranger, took part in the D-Day invasion of France, and was killed in action in Germany December 7, 1944. Any assistance anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

The volunteer has not seen him in years, but said that he heard that Joe is alive and in good health. He will pass on this website to him when he tracks him down.

I am a friend of Johnny Matney, a  4th Battalion Ranger who served with Pfc Bert Miller Jr. also of the 4th battalion, "D" Co. Bert was severely wounded at the Anzio beach landing in Jan. of 44. That was the last time Johnny saw Bert Miller Jr. Johnny had heard Bert had lost a leg from the wound but was still alive at that time. Bert was from the South Bend Indiana area at that time, but Johnny has not been able to make contact with him since the war. He asked me if I would help to try and locate Bert if he is still alive since I have a computer. Any help you could give me on how to go about locating him would be greatly appreciated.

My dad was with the 3rd Bn Rangers, company "A." He didn't talk much about it and passed away August 2002. His name was Frederick William Staples, Pvt 1st class. We purchased a stepping stone for him before he passed away. He was very proud of serving under Darby and named my brother after him, Terrance Darby Staples. After the 1st and 3rd Rangers were wiped out, my dad was transferred to the First Special Service Force. After he was with them for a while, they brought him back to the states to train the new recruits as fast as he could to send them overseas to fight. He trained at Paris, TX until the war was over in 1945. If you know of any Rangers or relatives who may remember him, please contact me. Randy M. Staples

Sgt Bernard Szewczuk

My uncle, Bernard Szewczuk, was in the 2nd Bn, company "D." He was KIA on D-day at the Pointe. His name is on the monument at Pointe du Hoc. From what I found in JoAnna M. McDonald's book, he is listed as Sgt Szowesuk. Slightly different spelling, but very close. Also, her book lists someone on the ship that entertained the men  by playing the banjo. According to my mom, he was a very good banjo player. He should have been on LCA 668 with Sgt Lomell and Sgt Kuhn. If any of the 2nd Bn Rangers remember him, please contact me. Walt Worona

6th M Sgt Elmer "Red" Kluver

My Dad would rarely talk about his experiences in WWII, but once  a year or so someone from his old unit would visit and they would stay up until the wee hours of the night talking.  My brothers and I would listen from another room. I know from his personal belongings and things my Mother told us, that he was first in the 98th Cavalry and then in the 6th Rangers in the Pacific in WWII. He refused any kind of pension or military honors during his lifetime on our ranch in Montana and at his death in 1976.  He was deeply troubled by his war experiences having participated in recon and work behind enemy lines with Capt. Mucci and Lt Strausbaugh. Cabanatuan, Luzon, and the emperor of Japan were always in his nightmares. Please contact me if any of you knew my father, Thank you Colleen Kluver - Johnson

3/E Russell E. Morse

My name is Russell E. Morse Jr. and I'm looking for anyone who served with my father Russell E. Morse from Southbridge, Mass. My Dad served in heavy weapons (mortar platoon) during WWII and was captured during the assault on Cisterna, Italy January 1944. He was wounded and captured during that assault. My parents were divorced when I was young (5 yrs) I know he was decorated for bravery. He also escaped from the POW camp after 1 unsuccessful try.  I'd like to know what camp he and fellow Rangers were sent to, but I know he made it to Russian lines, so I believe the camp had to be somewhere in east Germany. He got away in late Jan '45. He suffered from what is now know as PTSS (shell shock) during WWII and was totally disabled due to that and wounds. Does anyone remember him? What camps he might have been in (he was a corporal). My father passed away on Jan 22, 1984. Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you..Sincerely Russell E. Morse Jr.

I read with interest your article and photo of the Ben on the Rangers bulletin board. My grandfather Radcliffe Duggan DSC was the captain of the Ben and I would love to hear from anyone who knew him or sailed with him to Normandy or anywhere else. He died in 1957 when I was only 4 years old and my father (his son) died in 1985. There are many gaps in our knowledge and at this time we are thinking of him and the countless others involved in D Day.    Don Duggan
